Your brother, you spent your whole childhood with him, the good times and the bad. But now, being “all growed up” he’s asked you to be his best man at his wedding, and with the job of being best man obviously comes the job of saying a speech.
For you, the best man, this speech can be a great opportunity. Its a time to send your brother off to a new life with his wife, give the audience a good old laugh, and most importantly just say those things you never got to tell your brother. Although this oration is a great opportunity, you must also remember that the last thing you want to do his let him down, or worse yet, embarass him. We can all remember at wedding past seeing a bestman who had too much to drink just completely embarass the groom. You don’t want to do that, so the first thing to remember is with making a speech comes responsibility, so don’t party too hard. Even if you spend hour upon hours crafting the best possible speech it will be all for naught if you’re in the wrong state of mind.
So, what are you going to say in your speech? There really isn’t some magic answer, or perfect speech that everyone can say, because good speeches are good because there very personal. Think back upon all the good memories and bad that you and your brother had, and give him and all the wedding attendees a good laugh. My tip would be to scatter your speech with lots of funny moments, but to definately end on a very sincere note. In many cases speeches are just all laughs or sometimes very crude, and although you’ll get some laughs, at the end of the day you actually want to say some sincere things that your brother can remember.
To memorize or not to memorize the speech? If your speech is very long you might need some notes or flashcards, but bottom line you never want to just type up a whole speech and just read it. A speech is all about delivery, and if your slowly trying read the small 2 point font of your absolutely pre written speech, your going to have a really tough time sounding sincere or making people laugh. Remeber, your supposed to say a speech, not read an essay!
Here is a free big brother best man speech video. Its by no means perfect, but from it you can probably draw out a lot of things that you want to say / do and a lot of things that you wouldn’t want to say / do. What I like about the speech is that its very personal, but I think the fact that its mostly pre written really takes away from how good it could be (notice how he has to keep looking down and finding his place on the paper). So here’s the free sample speech:
Good luck with your best man speech! Remember, its an opportunity, so treat it as such and surprise your brother with the best speech ever!
